REV. DR DORU COSTACHE
Born (in January 1967) and educated in Romania, Revd Dr Doru Costache received his Doctor of Theology degree from the University of Bucharest in 2000, after the public defense of a thesis on St Maximus the Confessor and the anthropic cosmological principle. His doctoral supervisor and mentor was the late Revd Professor Dumitru Popescu, a member of the Romanian Academy. For a number of years in the finalising stages of his disertation, and a little after, he was guided by the reputed theologians, Revd Professor Ioan Ica Sr and Revd Professor Ioan I. Ica Jr. Among the scholars that left a positive mark upon both his character and professional activity, he fondly remembers Professor Basarab Nicolescu, physicist and philosopher, a member of the Romanian Academy and a true homo universalis, and Dr Magda Stavinschi, astronomer, with whom he was priviledged to work for some years in the fascinating field of science and theology.
Before relocating to Australia, in December 2004, he worked (full time) for nine years in the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Orthodox Theology. From 2001 to 2003, he worked as a sessional lecturer in patristics and theology at the International Academy for the Study of the History of Religions and Culture, Bucharest. In 2002, he was a visiting lecturer (sessional) in fundamental theology/apologetics at the University of Craiova, Faculty of Orthodox Theology. From 2000 to 2006, he was involved in various research programs in the fields of science and theology, and transdisciplinarity. In parallel, he laboured in the Church as a deacon, then presbyter and confessor, since January 1997. From 2004 and until October 2008, he was parish priest of the Romanian Orthodox parish in Croydon Park, NSW, in which capacity he acted as chief editor of the bilingual magazine Parochial Life.
He is a Presbyter under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia and Senior Lecturer in Patristics at St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College, Sydney. His research interests are in traditional/patristic theology, transdisciplinarity and the dialogue of science and theology. Currently, he undertakes an interpretation of Genesis 1 within tradition and in light of contemporary challenges.
