P8195A Studies in Eastern Orthodox Canon Law

This course unit provides students with an opportunity to develop introductory level skills and knowledge in Eastern Orthodox Canon Law. It is designed to enable the student to develop a familiarity with the formation and development of the Orthodox canonical tradition, with the corpus canonum and its sources; to engage with important secondary literature in the field; to understand and interpret canons in a manner that leads to an appropriate application following a consistent methodology, with special emphasis on the fundamental canonical principles of oikonomia and territorial accommodation; to comprehend the basic elements of “classic” canonical questions, such as the reception of converts and the establishment of the Ecumenical Patriarchate; as well as to present in both written and oral forms canonical insight on pastoral problems.
