Dr Elizabeth Kefallinos
Lecturer in Modern Greek Language Studies
Dr Elizabeth Kefallinos is lecturer in Greek Language studies at St Andrew's. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney, majoring in Philosophy, History, and Greek Philology. Her Honours thesis examined poetic interpretations within the literature of the Generation of the 30s (Modernism) from 1986 to 1990. She completed her PhD at the University of Sydney with a thesis entitled “Greek Surrealism—Critical Interpretations: Popular and Learned Traditions in the Poetry of Nikos Engonopoulos.” Dr Kefallinos also holds a Diploma of Education Studies from Macquarie University. She served as Head of Greek Studies at Macquarie University from 1997 to 2019 and as Acting Director of the interdepartmental Hellenic Studies Degree, where, in collaboration with the Ancient History Department, she co-developed and taught courses on Olympism and heroism from 2010 to 2019, as well as a complete four-level language programme, including linguistics, morphology, grammar, typology, and cultural interpretations.
Dr Kefallinos has received multiple university teaching and research grants, resulting in numerous publications, prizes, and awards, including the Australian Postgraduate Research Award (1991–1995). She has supervised and examined Higher Degree Research (HDR) theses at both the PhD and Honours levels. Additionally, she has been an active member of the Greek community, delivering speeches, tutorials, and interviews on Greek language and culture at Macquarie University. Since July 2021, Dr Kefallinos has the honour and blessing to teach Greek language at Saint Andrews Greek Orthodox Theological College.
