The Very Reverend Dr Georgios (George) Liangas is the Parish Priest of the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of St Nectarios, Burwood (in Sydney), and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in private practice. From 2027, he will be teaching Pastoral Theology at St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College.

Dr Liangas holds a Master of Arts from the Sydney College of Divinity and postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry, alongside his medical qualifications and specialist fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. His professional work in child and adolescent psychiatry, together with his pastoral ministry, has fostered a particular interest in the relationship between Orthodox Christian pastoral care, mental health and the spiritual and psychological wellbeing of individuals and families.

He is the National Coordinator of the Greek Orthodox Pastoral Health Care Network Australia, a ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. The Network seeks to support people experiencing illness and their families, strengthen the pastoral care provided by clergy, and foster collaboration between the Church and health care professionals. In this role, he contributes to the development of pastoral health care initiatives, educational resources and opportunities for professional and pastoral engagement across the Australian Church. Dr Liangas has also represented the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia at the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Pastoral Health Care Conference in Rhodes.

His academic interests include the contribution of the human sciences to pastoral ministry, the pastoral implications of mental health conditions, and the development of effective and compassionate approaches to caring for people within the life of the Church. He is particularly interested in how an understanding of human development, psychological wellbeing and family dynamics can inform pastoral practice while remaining grounded in the theological and spiritual tradition of the Orthodox Church.

Dr Liangas has published in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented research at professional scientific meetings and conferences. His previous research and publications have addressed childhood asthma, including the relationship between laughter and asthma, as well as other aspects of paediatric research.
