Church History

Overview
The early centuries of the Christian church’s history were a formative period where doctrine was consolidated and institutional structures were established. As such, it is fundamentally important to an understanding of the subsequent history of the church. It sets the context for doctrinal and institutional development, with an analysis of the various conflicts, challenges and relationships that occurred and which set the foundation for the ongoing development of the church.
Undergraduate Units
H7110A History of the Early Church
The early centuries i.e. to the 4th or 5th centuries of the Christian churchs history were a formative period where doctrine was consolidated and institutional structures were established. As such, this period is fundamentally important to an understanding of the subsequent history of the church. This introductory unit provides an approach to the study of church history, with particular reference to the Early Church period. In doing so, it sets the context for doctrinal and institutional development, with an analysis of the various conflicts, challenges and relationships that occurred and which set the foundation for the ongoing development of the church. The unit may serve as a Core unit and part of a Major in Church History within the Bachelor awards.
H7232A Early Byzantine History
This course unit builds on the platform of H7110A by examining the historical, cultural and theological factors of the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantium, generally from the age of St Constantine the Great until the period of the Triumph of Orthodoxy or, from the 4th to 9th centuries, as well as the empires relations with its neighbours. It is an Elective unit and forms part of a Major in Church History within the Bachelor awards.

Building upon Early Byzantine History, this course unit examines the historical, cultural and theological factors of the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantium, generally from the 9th to 15th centuries, as well as the empires relations with its neighbours. It is an Elective unit and forms part of a Major in Church History within the Bachelor awards.
H7234A Modern Orthodox Christian History
Building upon later Byzantine History, this course unit examines the place of the Orthodox Churches in the historical context of the pre-modern 1400-1500, modern 1500-1950 and post-modern eras 1950-today.

This graduate course unit explores the historical, cultural and philosophical development of Christian art and architecture within the Byzantine context and beyond, highlighting the relevance of iconography, materiality, sacred space, soundscape and lightscape for the Byzantine faithful and for the contemporary ecclesial experience.

This graduate course unit explores the historical and literary development of hagiography in the Byzantine context, highlighting its relevance for the Byzantines and for the contemporary world.
