St Andrew’s Theological College was proudly represented at the 25th International Congress of Byzantine Studies in Vienna by Faculty Member Dr Andrew Mellas.

Bringing together more than 1,500 scholars from around the world, the Congress is the foremost international gathering in the field of Byzantine Studies. Dr Mellas presented his paper, “Performing the Hymns of Romanos the Melodist in Byzantium and Beyond,” exploring the performance and reception of Romanos’ songs from late antiquity through the Byzantine musical tradition and into the present.

Dr Mellas also participated in the Cambridge University Press book launch of the recently published Cambridge Companion to the Byzantine Church, which he co-edited with Professor Bronwen Neil.

The next Byzantine Congress will take place in Athens in 2031.
