On Monday, 3 August, St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College, in conjunction with the Pastoral Health Care Network Australia, welcomed the Revd Dr Stephen Muse for a public lecture entitled “Reflections on the Convergence of Ascetical Theology, Neurobiological Advances and Trauma Therapy in Clinical Practice.” The evening explored the relationship between the wisdom of the Orthodox ascetical tradition and contemporary developments in neuroscience and trauma therapy, highlighting how both seek the healing and restoration of the whole human person—mind, body and soul.

The lecture was attended by more than 60 people in person, with a further 60 participants joining online from across Australia and overseas. The audience included clergy, health professionals, academics, students and members of the wider community, all of whom engaged attentively with Fr Stephen's thought-provoking and insightful presentation.

Representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Iakovos warmly welcomed Fr Stephen on behalf of the College and expressed his gratitude for his willingness to share the fruits of his extensive pastoral, theological and clinical experience. Revd Dr Fr George Liangas, National Coordinator of the Pastoral Health Care Network Australia, then introduced the speaker, highlighting Fr Stephen’s distinguished ministry as an Orthodox priest, pastoral theologian, psychotherapist and internationally respected lecturer, whose work over more than four decades has brought Orthodox spirituality into fruitful dialogue with psychology, trauma recovery and pastoral care.

Fr Stephen’s lecture generated lively discussion and reflection, offering a compelling vision of how the Orthodox Christian understanding of the human person continues to illuminate contemporary questions surrounding healing, suffering and spiritual growth. Following the presentation, attendees remained for supper, enjoying the opportunity for fellowship and further conversation with Fr Stephen and one another.
