Elevation to Oikonomos

On Sunday 13 May, College graduate Fr Stavros Karvelas (BTh, 2000) was elevated to the office of Oikonomos by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia. This conferral took place at the Greek Orthodox Parish of St Therapon (Thornleigh, NSW) during the Vespers for the Patronal Feast Day at which His Eminence presided. The Parish of St Therapon was established by His Eminence in 2006 and Fr Stavros was appointed as its first parish priest.

2018 Graduation Events

On Friday 13 April, the Thanksgiving Service for Graduates of St Andrew’s Theological College was celebrated in the Cathedral of the Annunciation (Redfern, NSW). The evening’s proceedings began with a Doxological Service chanted by faculty members and students. His Eminence Archbishop STYLIANOSof Australia, as Dean, recited a benediction over the graduates and conferred them with the College's Ecclesiastical Certificate.

Opening of the Academic Year 2018

Today marked the official opening of the academic year at St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College in Sydney. A Doxology Service was celebrated in the College Chapel of St John the Evangelist and Theologian by the Dean, His Eminence Archbishop STYLIANOS of Australia, among faculty members, staff, alumni, students and guests.

College graduate, Fr Nektarios (MA, 2016), a monk of the Holy Monastery of the Mother of God ‘Pantanassa’ (NSW), was ordained to the holy presbytery by His Grace Bishop Seraphim of Apollonias on Saturday 16 December at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Redfern (NSW). The abbot of the Holy Monastery, the Very Rev. Archimandrite Fr Eusebios, himself a College graduate, served with His Grace, together with fellow alumni Fr Kyrillos Zisis, Fr Panagiotis Protopsaltis, Fr Agathangelos Masteas and Dn Nicholas Georgiou.


College graduate, Goran Jovcic (BTh, 1999), was ordained to the holy diaconate by His Grace Bishop Nikandros of Doryleon on Sunday 15 October at the Greek Orthodox Church of St George in Thebarton (SA). Deacon Goran is a married clergyman and the son of the Very Rev. Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Milorad Jovcic of the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand. His younger twin brothers Vasilije and Jovan likewise completed their Bachelor of Theology degrees through St Andrew’s at the end of 2001.

2017 Theology Symposium

With the blessing of our College Dean, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia, the College held its Second Theology Symposium from 1-2 September. The theme of this year’s Symposium was ‘The Mystery of the Holy Trinity: Implications for Everyday Living,’ and was organised by Professor James Harrison (Director of Research, Sydney College of Divinity) and Dr Philip Kariatlis (Academic Director and Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology, St Andrew’s). It was attended by more than sixty delegates.  

Intensive Lectures Series in Patristics and Christian Ethics

The College was honoured to host visiting scholars from overseas for three intensive lecture series. Fr John Behr delivered two distinct series of intensive lectures on the Early Church Fathers and on the subject of patristic anthropology from 10-20 August. Deacon Perry Hamalis, the Cecelia Schneller Mueller Professor of Religion at North Central College (Illinois), delivered a series of intensive lectures on Orthodox Christian Ethics from 28-31 August.

Public Lecture by the Very Rev. Prof. John Behr

The College was honoured to host a public lecture by Father John Behr on 16 August entitled ‘The Church: Our Mother “bearing from Her Heart the Word” to the World Today’. Father John is the Father Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York. He is the author of numerous books and articles, and teaches courses in patristics, dogmatics and scriptural exegesis at the seminary, and also at Fordham University (New York), where he is the Distinguished Lecturer in Patristics.
