Abstract: The paucity of references by modern Western biblical scholars to the works of those of the East has been noted a number of times, not only from an Orthodox perspective. In this paper, I explore this phenomenon and the reasons behind it. This will involve an overview of modern biblical scholarship in the Orthodox tradition especially over the past thirty or so years. After a brief look at the practice among the early patristic exegetes and the example of the 13th century Thomas Aquinas, the remainder of the paper will focus on the potential richness of Eastern and Western scholars learning from one another and thus contributing as true “servants of the Word” (Lk 1:2) to bringing about the unity for which Jesus prayed (Jn 17:21), for the good of the whole Church and the glory of God.
