'Themes in Contemporary Theology' Lecture by Prof. Paul Gavrilyuk

On 22 October, faculty and students welcomed via Zoom Prof. Paul Gavrilyuk (Professor of Theology, University of St Thomas, Minnesota) for the College’s ongoing series ‘Themes in Contemporary Theology’ held with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia. Prof. Gavrilyuk is also the President and Founder of the International Orthodox Theological Association (IOTA), a global network of Orthodox scholars fostering inter-Orthodox scholarly dialogue and engagement with contemporary culture in light of Orthodox tradition. IOTA organises conferences, publishes books, book reviews, and podcasts to this end. Our very own Sub-Dean, Assoc. Professor Philip Kariatlis, is a member of IOTA’s International Governance Committee. Prof. Gavrilyuk thanked His Eminence for the invitation before addressing the fascinating topic, “Does God Suffer?” based on insights from his book The Suffering of the Impassible God: The Dialectics of Patristic Thought (OUP, 2004). Prof. Gavrilyuk has published many other important works, including the recent On Christian Leadership: The Letters of Alexander Schmemann and Georges Florovsky (1947-1955) with SVS Press (2020). A robust Q&A followed the talk.
