On the 19/09/2013 St Andrew's hosted a Round Table discussion on 'Expanding Reason: the Christian Transformation of Philosophy in the World of the Fathers' featuring Professor David Bradshaw (University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY USA), who was also one of the keynote speakers for this year's Patristic Symposium on St Cyril, Dr Adam Cooper (JP II Institute, Melbourne), and the Very Revd Dr Doru Costache (St Andrew's). The session began with the Very Revd Dr Costache inviting Professor Bradshaw to share his insights into the manner in which the Eastern Fathers including St Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, St Neilos the Ascetic and St John Damascene approached philosophy; after which Dr Cooper was invited to expand upon the approaches/insights to the 'love of wisdom' by Western Fathers such as St Augustine. The session ended with Fr Doru highlighting the fact that the Fathers' positive appropriation of philosophical concepts and ideas equated to a transformation of these ideas in light of the Gospel of Christ, making them the true philosophers par excellence.
